Applying to become a Buddy

  1. Apply – Fill in our registration form and tell us as much as you can about your child-related experience and availability. If you’ve got questions first, feel free to call, email or WhatsApp us.
  2. Interview & induction – We’ll interview you and, if you’re a good fit, take you through an induction: our standards, how we proceed, what we need from you, what families typically want, and answers to any questions. We’ll also guide you on any areas where you might want extra information or support.
  3. Compliance – We will advise you on what we need to proceed: DBS, right-to-work, references and safeguarding checks.
  4. Profile – Between us we create a profile from the information you’ve given us.
  5. Smart matching – We match Buddies and families so both sides’ requirements align. You need a role that suits you just as much as a family needs a Buddy who suits them. We share your profile with families whose roles you’re interested in—when we think you’re a strong match.
  6. Family interview – Meet the family to make sure it feels right for everyone. This is often by Zoom but can be on the phone or in person.
  7. Paid trial / Meet and Greet/ Settling-in – Where appropriate, there may be a short meet and greet in person, a paid trial or settling-in sessions. This ensures that buddies and families are happy going forwards.
  8. Start – Begin the role with an agreed schedule and ongoing support from the My Big Buddy team.
